Support from Design Inception through Construction

Illumination is more than just flipping a switch to turn on a light, and design is not a simple process of choosing that luminaire and switch that controls it.It is first understanding the needs of the individual who is using it, how they will maintain it and how it affects the environment around us. At Salinas Lighting Consult we look at the entire lighting and design process in a more holistic manner from design inception thru construction and on to how that system will be maintained over its life.

It is a process that first works to understand the needs and abilities of those who will be using the system, examines new technologies and procedures to ensure an effective design and put tools in place to allow the system to be maintained for years to come. And years from now, when it is time to expand or upgrade to new concepts, the tools are in place to make that transition as smooth as possible.

While it is important to understand that we offer a wide variety of services for the construction industry in the areas of lighting and lighting controls design, we are also here to support the lighting professional who has need of someone to assist with specific areas they may not normally be prepared to take on such as lighting controls or systems constructability. The Pacific Northwest is fortunate to have a great number of accomplished lighting designers and it is our desire to assist them as well, where needed, in meeting their desired goals for the quality of the lighted environment.

We offer the following:

During Design:
  • Customer Needs Analysis
    • Work with the client to evaluate the existing lighting system and the client’s needs.
    • Review of the Architect’s Basis of Design to establish the direction of the design
  • Lighting Design
    • Create a design narrative which allows the design team to understand how the lighting system will meet the needs of the client and the new architecture.
    • Develop conceptual studies looking at how the design will meet the design narrative
    • Photometric analysis of select areas to evaluate how the design direction will meet recommended practice for the task.
    • CADD layout and design of the lighting system
    • Mock up as required to test system components such as light source types, design concepts and special applications which confirm direction of the design continuation during design development and prior to construction to establish constructability with other systems.
    • Luminaire selection process which evaluates baseline and optional technologies to ensure we are meeting the needs of the client within the constraints of established budgets.
    • Lighting specifications
    • Required energy budget documentation
  • Lighting Controls Design
    • Establishment of the Sequence of Operations for the control system to set the path for controls design early in the process.
    • Systems integration is fast becoming a critical part of most current designs. We work with the various disciplines to provide the opportunity to interface with lighting controls allowing a more effective system for the client.
    • CADD creation of the schematic one-line concept and device placement with schedules and room by room requirements.
    • Controls specifications
  • Cost Analysis
    • Life Cycle analysis of select system components for comparison with alternatives so the client has full understanding of the system over its expected use life.
    • Return on Investment for select system components
    • Systems comparison to evaluate new technology or alternate concepts.
    • Budget review for cost evaluations.
During Construction:
  • Design review with the installing electrical contractor to establish a full understanding of the design intent and expected outcomes.
  • System constructability review to understand how the system will work with the installations by other disciplines within the project.
  • Lighting controls integration review with other disciplines (HVAC, A/V, Security) to ensure communication between the systems is provided as specified.
  • Lighting systems commissioning assistance for the commissioning agent with testing requirements, required settings, documentation worksheets and maintenance requirements.
  • Establish requirements for the Operations and Maintenance documentation. Review of the documentation to ensure what has been specified is completed.
